Answer 12 questions on the size of the state, healthcare, the military, immigration, inequality, energy, checks on power, guns, abortion, marriage, the death penalty and cannabis. Every country on the world map is then scored on what its published spending and its own law actually say.

Nobody voted on this. Every country is scored against published spending figures and its own law, and the numbers are printed next to the score.

Where do the numbers come from?

Our World in Data; World Bank; Small Arms Survey; Center for Reproductive Rights; ILGA World; Amnesty International; Compiled from national legislation. Each figure carries the year it was observed, and the four legal statuses are read from their publisher's own categories rather than a scale we invented.

What if a country has no figure for something?

Then that question drops out of its score and the page says so, rather than the country being given a guess or a zero. A score built from nine answers is easier to ace than one built from twelve, so every result prints how many it was scored on.

Question 5

Does a high score mean I should move there?

Accepted Answer

No. This ranks how a country governs, which is a different question from whether you could move there or would want to. It says nothing about visas, cost of living, language, or whether you would be safe or welcome.

Why is there a photograph of a head of government?

Because it is the quickest way to recognise a country, and the result is meant to be shared. It is a caption, not an endorsement: the office and the date are printed with it, and the offices were last read on 2026-09-11.
